Winter Escape / Coco's Paradise Inn

I painted this last year when I had some time off work, so it's not very new but I think it's still quite ok.

For a change I wanted to go with a more cartoony look with this one so I started out by doing some thumbnail sketching the traditional way by markers, pencils and inks, then scanned the rough sketches on my computer and started adding colour. I love the organic and somewhat wonky touch you get with traditional media that usually lacks from my digital sketches, so doing the base work with pencils and inks suited for this picture very well.

In the painting process the hard part was not to lose any of the flow and looseness my initial sketch had, but in the end I think it turned out fine. I had a lot fun with all the small details, boat trip maps, bar menus etc. Hope you like it

I actually gave a short lecture of the whole process behind this painting (and couple others) early this year, so if you have any questions I just might have some material ready.

Above The Clouds

The shape of a nearby Lauttasaari watertower, sky city of Star Wars and some oriental patterns inspired me with new sci-fi painting.

I started with 3dsmax by doing a simple lathe object and rendering the basic guidelines for perpective. I then started to sketch the overall mood, palette and atmosphere and after that it was mainly just straight forward painting it all in detail. I had a lot of fun with all the small details, windows, vents, little leakings, markings on the surcafe and especially with light. Finetuning the cloud tones was again an interesting challenge, and I think it turned out fine.

This is a relatively quick material, light and color study I painted last weekend.

The idea for the painting came to my mind week earlier in one of our weekly Sketch Group sessions. At some point during my normal painting process I got inspired by the materials and just started adding more and more detail, finally coming up with one the most detailed digital paintings I have done

If you are interested I can post some of the WIP images and tell in more detail more about the overall process. And all comments and critique are welcome as always.

I got an idea for this scene after doing some random searching in google image search and finding this small picture of a buddhist temple, with very beautiful decorations on each gable. I'm kind of a fan of eastern architecture and japanese garden so this image kind of painted itself when I finally got started :>

This also gave me an opportunity to study how to balance great amounts of detail and colour. Painted in Photoshop, took about 15 hours over couple of days. I'm quite happy with the finished image, nothing too much out of place..yet

I can post a few work in progress images if you're interested. And all C&C are welcome.

A digital painting done in about 5-7 hours during one day @ Photoshop. For the upper part of the fountain I used a 3d grid ( rendered in 3dsmax) as a reference. But I guess I can say the colors etc. are 99% Photoshop

Last week it was the first snowfall of the season here in southern Finland, so I think the the main goal of this piece was to capture the color palette and light of a clear winterday.

First I drew something like 4-6 different thumbnails on paper (woah!) trying to find the best viewpoint and most balanced perspective/composition. In 3dsmax I started off by modeling and rendering a rough wire model to have something to start with. A few basic shapes/objects and a couple renderpasses for rough indicating light, wire for perspective and an alpha mask for the odd spheresystem in the middle. Colouring, painting etc. was done in Photoshop, not that much any interesting to tell about it. Took about three days (4-6h a day) for me to finish this.

ALL c&c welcome, tough mostly I'd like to hear about the values and color balance of this one and how to improve it.

Well, this lagoon scene I actually sketched couple years ago, but I wasn't able to finish it until now. I think these lagoon/tropical island scenes are currently a very popular subject, especially on matte painting forums, maybe because the Dylan DVD cover is advertised everywhere The scene itself is actually composed of nearly 30-50 separate image pastes from 8-10 different images to match the shape and nature of the original sketch. A lot of stuff had to be hand painted. C&C is always welcome.
Painting all those leaves was a huge process, but the whole scene took something like three or four days to finish.
